SCIENTIFIC EXPERT NETWORKS
Scientific support from the Member States of the European Union (EU) is essential for the functioning of the EU food safety system.
To support EFSA’s Scientific Panels and working units, the Authority coordinates 15 scientific networks composed of experts from organisations in the EU Member States with expertise in specific scientific fields. These networks facilitate scientific cooperation by coordinating activities, developing joint projects, and exchanging information, expertise and best practices.
AESAN coordinates two national networks supporting EFSA representatives
National Network on Nanotechnology in the Food Area
This network was established in 2011 with the aim of strengthening available capacities and resources through a comprehensive approach that encompasses both the applications of nanotechnology in food and the legal, analytical, environmental, and toxicological aspects arising from its use. In this way, it seeks to become a critical, expert, and trusted voice for health and regulatory authorities, as well as for the scientific community, industry stakeholders, and consumers. It supports the national representative in the EFSA Nanotechnology Network.

National Network on Food Contact Materials
This network was established in 2024 with the aim of providing a forum for scientific and technical excellence in the field of Food Contact Materials (FCMs). Its members include representatives from public administrations, academia, technological centres, and industry, represented through the main sector associations.
The network will serve as a platform for the coordination of activities, the development and implementation of joint projects, and the exchange of experiences and best practices. It will play a key role in supporting AESAN and the EFSA Scientific Network on Risk Assessment of Food Contact Materials by facilitating the exchange of information related to risk assessment activities at both national and European Union levels.
