SCIENTIFIC EXPERT NETWORKS

Scientific support from the Member States of the European Union (EU) is essential for the functioning of the EU food safety system.

To support EFSA’s Scientific Panels and working units, the Authority coordinates 15 scientific networks composed of experts from organisations in the EU Member States with expertise in specific scientific fields. These networks facilitate scientific cooperation by coordinating activities, developing joint projects, and exchanging information, expertise and best practices.

National Network on Food Contact Materials

Established in 2024, this network provides a scientific and technical forum focused on Food Contact Materials (FCM). It brings together representatives from public administrations, academia, technology centres and the food industry, through the main sectoral associations.

The network supports the coordination of activities, the development and implementation of joint projects, and the exchange of experience and best practices. It plays a key role in supporting AESAN and EFSA’s scientific network on risk assessment of food contact materials, while facilitating the exchange of information on risk assessment activities at both national and EU level.

On 21 March 2024, AESAN held the 1st Meeting of the National Network on Food Contact Materials (FCM).
