The 93rd meeting of the Scientific Committee has been held. The members of the Committee were welcomed and greeted by the President of AESAN, Ms. Bibiana Medialdea, and the Executive Director, Ms. Isabel Peña-Rey, who thanked the Scientific Committee for its work, as a fundamental element in management decision-making, and for its commitment to the protection of consumers' health.

Two reports from the AESAN Scientific Committee have been published on the EFSA Food Risk Assessment Europe open repository created for the dissemination of reports from national food safety agencies.

Issue 38 of the Journal of the AESAN Scientific Committee has been published which includes the latest two reports approved by the Scientific Committee and an external contribution.

The 92nd meeting of the AESAN Scientific Committee was held. The two approved reports will be published on the web page of AESAN.


13 October 2023

Dr. Azucena del Carmen Mora Gutiérrez, member of the AESAN Scientific Committee, has been appointed Full Professor of Microbiology at the University of Santiago de Compostela.


7 October 2023

The activities of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition were presented at the XXVIII Spanish National Congress and XIX Ibero-American Congress of Veterinary History held in Ourense on 6-8 October 2023.

A video of interviews with the Chairpersons of the AESAN Scientific Committee from 2003 to 2026 has been published on the AESAN website.

The 91st meeting of the AESAN Scientific Committee was held chaired by its President, Dr. Rivas. Five draft reports were discussed during the meeting.

The members of the Scientific Committee for Risk Assessment in Food Safety (CERSA) of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Morocco have visited the AESAN headquarters in Madrid to hold a meeting with representatives of the AESAN Scientific Committee.

Dr. Ana Rivas-Velasco, President of the AESAN Scientific Committee, has been appointed Vice-Rector for Quality, Teaching Innovation and Graduate Studies at the University of Granada.

On World Food Safety Day, AESAN held a Risk Assessment Conference on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its Scientific Committee. The event was attended by around 180 people, including 80 members and former members of the Scientific Committee.

The new AESAN Scientific Committee has been constituted. The meeting was held at AESAN headquarters in Madrid. Dr. Ana María Rivas-Velasco, of the University of Granada was chosen as Chair of the Scientific Committee and Dr. Antonio Valero Díaz, of the University of Cordoba, was chosen as Vice Chair.

An article has been published in the journal Nutrients: Caffeine, D-glucuronolactone and Taurine Content in Energy Drinks: Exposure and Risk Assessmet, based on the report of the Scientific Committee.


19 September 2022

The Minister of Consumer Affairs, Alberto Garzón, and the Executive Director of AESAN, Isabel Peña-Rey, have presented the Report of the Scientific Committee of AESAN on sustainable dietary and physical activity recommendations for the Spanish population, together with the coordinator of the report, Dr. Esther López, and Dr. Susana Aznar and Dr. Ujué Fresán, external collaborators in the working group responsible for preparing the report and experts in physical activity sciences for health and sustainability, respectively.

The 84th meeting of the AESAN Scientific Committee was held in Barcelona. The members of the Scientific Committee were welcomed by Dr. Jordi Camarasa, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences of the University of Barcelona.

Issue 35 of the Journal of the AESAN Scientific Committee has been published which includes the latest seven reports approved by the Scientific Committee and one collaboration.


5 April 2022

A meeting of the AESAN Scientific Committee was held (83rd session). During the meeting, ten reports were debated. The meeting was held at the National Centre for Food, the AESAN reference laboratory located in Majadahonda, whose laboratories were visited by the Scientific Committee members.

Dr. Silvia Pichardo Sánchez, member of the AESAN Scientific Committee, has been appointed Full Professor of Toxicology at the University of Seville.


24 February 2022

A meeting of the AESAN Scientific Committee was held (82nd session). During the meeting, ten reports were debated. The two approved reports will be published on the web page of AESAN. The end of the session, the Scientific Committee held a first Risk Assessment Workshop attended by participants in the EFSA EU-FORA Programme for the training of risk assessors. The six participants in the programme, coming from Greece, Ireland, Italy and Poland, had the opportunity to share with the Scientific Committee their activities in different Spanish Universities and Research Centres.

Dr. Pablo Fernández Escámez, Vice-President of the Scientific Committee of AESAN, participated as speaker in the seminar entitled "Hygiene and flexibility: workshop on the Royal Decree 1086/2020" where he presented the report of the Scientific Committee on the safety of air-drying outdoors foods that are produced by traditional methods.

28 October 2021

Doctors Pablo Fernández, Sonia Marín and Magdalena Rafecas presented three reports of the Scientific Committee on chemical, biological and nutritional risks to the participants of the EU-FORA programme of the European Food Safety Authority for the training of risk assessors who are visiting the AESAN.


18 October 2021

Dr. Magdalena Rafecas, President of the Scientific Committee, participated in the round table on “New food security challenges in a context of recovery after the pandemic”, held during the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the creation of AESAN.

Dr. Araceli Díaz Perales has joined the Scientific Committee of AESAN. She has PhD in Biological Sciences and Head of the Plant Allergens Research Group at the Center for Plant Biotechnology and Genomics of the Polytechnic University of Madrid

The 80th meeting of the Scientific Committee was held chaired by its President, Dr. Rafecas. Ten reports were debated during the meeting.

The members of the AESAN Scientific Committee who were part of the working group of the report of the Scientific Committee to revise and update the Dietary Recommendations for the Spanish population have published an article in the journal Nutrients. 2021; 13(9):3131: Food-Based Dietary Guidelines around the World: A Comparative Analysis to Update AESAN Scientific Committee Dietary Recommendations; in relation to the report.

The 79th meeting of the Scientific Committee has been held. During the meeting, four reports have been approved and will be published shortly on the AESAN website.

The 78th meeting of the Scientific Committee was held chaired by its President, Dr. Rafecas. Twelve reports were debated during the meeting.

Dra. Montaña Cámara, former president of the Scientific Committee of AESAN has received the award granted by the Spanish Federation of Food and Beverage Industries in the category of Science and Health for her work as a teacher and as president of the Scientific Committee of the AESAN until April 2021

The new AESAN Scientific Committee has been constituted. The meeting was held at AESAN headquarters in Madrid. Dr. Magdalena Rafecas-Martínez, of the University of Barcelona was chosen as Chair of the Scientific Committee and Dr. Pablo Fernández Escámez, of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, was chosen as Vice Chair.

The Board of Directors of AESAN has appointed the 20 members of the AESAN Scientific Committee for a period of two years. Ten of the members have renewed their membership for two more years and another ten have joined for the first time, replacing those who had already completed their maximum term of four years.

The 75th meeting of the Scientific Committee was held with the assistance of the Executive Director of AESAN, who highlighted the importance of the Committee's tasks and thanked its members for their excellent work.

Dr. David Rodríguez Lázaro, Vice-president of the Scientific Committee, has coordinated a study on the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater in Brazil published in the journal Science of The Total Environment.

Dr. Jordi Mañes, member of the Scientific Committee, participated on 5 November in a congress organized by FESNAD. He presented the activities of the AESAN Scientific Committee in the field of nutrition.


28 September 2020

Dr. Cámara, Chair of the Scientific Committee, and her team have received First Prize in the Technology and Knowledge Transfer Prize from the Complutense University of Madrid in the Area of Biomedical and Health Sciences for the project titled “Promotion and dissemination of scientific knowledge on agrodiversity and health”.

The aim of this transfer is to highlight the healthy properties of vegetable products as the pillar of a healthy and sustainable diet, promoting their consumption to improve the general health of the population and especially children, thus reducing the risk of certain non-transmissible diseases.

 The 72nd meeting of the Scientific Committee was held with the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Mr. Alberto Garzón, in attendance. The Minister highlighted his commitment to strengthening the role of the Scientific Committee and of AESAN itself.

On 12 and 13 February the 24th International Practical Nutrition Conference was held in Madrid. The Chair of the AESAN Scientific Committee, Dr. Montaña Cámara Hurtado, and the Vice Chair, Dr. David Rodríguez Lázaro, participated in the round-table discussion titled Emerging Risks in the Food Chain: Current Situation and Challenges. During their interventions, they presented strategies for identifying risks and examples of emerging risks in a changing society.

Dr. Montaña Cámara Hurtado, Chair of the AESAN Scientific Committee, has been appointed Full Professor at Complutense University of Madrid in the Nutrition and Bromatology Area within the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Several members of the AESAN Scientific Committee are among the highest rated researchers in food safety according to the Expertscape ranking which assesses the quantity and quality of over 30,000 publications from the last 10 years by close to 54,000 experts in the field. 

Dr. David Rodríguez Lázaro, Vice Chair of the AESAN Scientific Committee and Professor at the University of Burgos ranked 27th in the world and 2nd in Spain in the field of Food Safety, which is led by Dr. José Luis Domingo at Universitat Rovira i Virgili. As well as Dr. Rodríguez Lázaro, another three members of AESAN’s Scientific Committee are ranked among the 25 highest rated Spanish food safety researchers: Dr. Jordi Mañes and Dr. Maria José Ruiz, both Professors at the Universitat de València and Dr. Sonia Marín, Professor at the University of Lleida. Dr. Vicente Sanchis, Dr. Guillermina Font and Dr. Cristina Nerín, former members of the Committee, also appeared in the top 25.

Scientific Committee reports on the exploration of chemical and biological hazards relevant to food safety in Spain were presented by Dr. Ángeles Jos and Dr. Jesús Santos respectively at the Food Analysis Reference Conference at the National Food Centre (CNA) of the AESAN. The CNA is the National Reference Laboratory for several chemical and biological hazards and this year marks the 45th anniversary of its creation.

Dr. Carlos Alonso Calleja, member of the AESAN Scientific Committee, has been appointed Full Professor of the Department of Food Hygiene and Technology at the Faculty of Veterinary in the University of León.

Dr. Montaña Cámara, Chair of the Scientific Committee and Full Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, has co-authored, along with Dr. Cristina Alonso and Dr. Virginia Fernández, the book Cultura alimentaria, El caso del etiquetado de alimentos (Food Culture: The Case of Food Labelling).

Dr. Magdalena Rafecas, member of the AESAN Scientific Committee, has been appointed Full Professor at the University of Barcelona within the knowledge area of Nutrition and Bromatology.

The new AESAN Scientific Committee has been constituted. The meeting was held at AESAN headquarters in Madrid. Dr. Montaña Cámara Hurtado, of Complutense University of Madrid, was chosen as Chair of the Scientific Committee and Dr. David Rodríguez Lázaro, of the University of Burgos, was chosen as Vice Chair. There were 74 candidates for the renewal of the Scientific Committee.

Dr. Carmen Rubio, member of the AESAN Scientific Committee and Professor at the University of La Laguna, has been appointed as member of the Executive Committee of the Hispanic Organization of Toxicologists, a special interest group within the Society of Toxicology (SOT) of the United States. Its principal objective is to provide support to the SOT and to provide a forum for awareness and promotion of toxicology information relating to the Hispanic community within the United States and abroad.

The microbiology research group at the University of Burgos in which Dr. David Rodríguez Lázaro participates, in collaboration with the Microbiology Service at Río Hortega University Hospital in Valladolid, and the Molecular Biology and Microbiology Laboratory at the Agrarian Technology Institute of Castilla y León (ITACyL), have characterised microbial populations present in the intestines of patients with chronic diarrhoea in the hospital setting.

The Food Safety and Nutrition Section of AECOSAN Scientific Committee held a meeting in Murcia. The Executive Director of AECOSAN, the Rector of the University of Murcia and the Director General of Public Health and Addiction for Murcia opened the session, highlighting the risk assessment work of the members of the Committee and thanking them.

The call for the submission of candidacies to join the Food Safety and Nutrition Section of the AECOSAN Scientific Committee has been published. The selection criteria are based on the excellence and suitability of the candidates for the functions required, as well as their independence and their objective availability for the adequate exercise of the role. The deadline for the submission of candidacies is 10 December 2018.

The 15th anniversary of the constitution of the AESAN Scientific Committee was marked with an event attended by the former Chairs of the Committee, Andreu Palou (2003-2010), Rosaura Farré (2011-2012), Emilio Martínez de Victoria (2013-2014), Guillermina Font (2015-2016) and Gaspar Ros (2017-2018).

The Regional Government of Catalonia, has awarded the Narcís Monturiol Medal to Dr. Olga Martín, member of the Food Safety Section of the AECOSAN Scientific Committee and Full Professor at the University of Lleida, in recognition of her contribution to the development of science and technology.


12 September 2018

The Food Safety and Nutrition Section of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition (AECOSAN) met for a session to debate a number of reports on matters of interest to food safety and nutrition. The Executive Director of AECOSAN, Ms Marta García, opened the session, thanking members of the Section for their work and stressing the importance of risk assessment as fundamental to decision-making. For his part, the Chair of the Section, Mr Gaspar Ros thanked the Agency for its support to the Scientific Committee.

The microbiology research group at the University of Burgos, in which Dr. David Rodríguez Lázaro participates, received third prize for the best oral paper at the 26th International Committee on Food, Microbiology and Hygiene (ICFMH) Conference. His paper described the “TORMES” bioinformatic software for the analysis of the bacterial genome developed at the University of Burgos.
