Carlos Alonso Calleja

 

He holds graduate degrees in Biological Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, and a PhD in Veterinary Medicine. He is Professor of Nutrition and Bromatology, and a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Food Hygiene and Technology at the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of León. He was Department Director between 2008 and 2012. He has supervised 7 PhD theses and around 70 additional research works (advanced study diplomas, graduate and post-graduate theses and dissertations). He has participated in 48 projects and research contracts and was the lead researcher in 13 of them. He has presented more than 150 papers at national and international scientific conferences, and has authored more than 140 publications, including 95 articles in international journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports, as well as other articles, books and book chapters.

His research focuses on food microbiology, mainly on aspects related to the antimicrobial effect and consumer risk in the decontamination processes of various food products, the characterisation and monitoring of antibiotic and biocide resistance in the food industry, and the study of the influence of different factors on biofilms produced by pathogenic and spoilage bacteria.

He is a member of the Executive Board of the Specialist Group on Food Microbiology of the Spanish Society of Microbiology (SEM). He heads the Recognised Research Group “Food Safety, Diet and Food Hygiene” (SEGURALI) of the University of León and is a member of the Consolidated Research Unit on Food Safety, UIC-253, of Castilla y León. He is an Academician of the Academy of Veterinarian Sciences of Castilla y Léon, where he supervises the “Food Hygiene, Inspection and Technology. Public Health” section.
