Presence of struvite crystals in pieces of canned squid from Spain

The Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition received information via the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), of a notification made by the Health Authorities in Germany, relating to the presence of struvite crystals in pieces of canned squid from Spain:

The notification was sent due to a complaint received from a German consumer. The products concerned are:

  • Chunks of squid with natural garlic aroma made by Sol & Mar, 240g, three 80 g cans, bar code: 20649913, batch number L-17-248-E and best before date 31.12.2023.
  • Chunks of squid with natural paprika aroma made by Sol & Mar, 240g, three 80 g cans, bar code: 20649920, batch number L-17-249 and best before date 31.12.2023.

The products were manufactured in Galicia and widely distributed in several countries in the EU, through the company Lidl. The manufacturer has notified consumers in a press release and is withdrawing the products concerned.

This Agency has informed all the Competent Authorities of the Autonomous Communities via the national Food Alert Network (SCIRI) to allow them to adopt the official control actions they consider relevant.

As a precautionary measure, it is recommended that consumers who may have the above product in their homes refrain from eating it.
