Date: 22 febrero 2017

Section: Seguridad Alimentaria

The New Food Safety and Nutrition Section of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition (AECOSAN) was formed today.

On completion of the application selection process, which began late 2016, the Board of Directors, based on a proposal from the President of AECOSAN, appointed the 20 members of the Food Safety and Nutrition Section of the Scientific Committee.

The President of the AECOSAN, together with the Executive Director and Deputy Director General for Food Safety Promotion, on behalf of the Agency, thanked the members of the Food Safety and Nutrition Section of the Scientific Committee for their valuable work and availability.

At the constitution meeting, held at the AECOSAN Head Office in Madrid, Dr Gaspar Ros Berruezo was elected as President of the Food Safety and Nutrition Section and Dr Ángeles Jos Gallego as the Vice-president.

The Scientific Committee is the Risk Assessment Body which takes on the task of providing AECOSAN with scientific opinions, defining the scope of the research work required for their functions and coordinating the work of the groups of experts who conduct risk assessments in the framework of the activities of the Agency. It has two sections, one for Food Safety and Nutrition and the other for Consumer Affairs.

The Food Safety and Nutrition Section is formed of 20 members of recognised scientific standing in areas relating to food safety and nutrition. These include Food Toxicology, Microbiology, Virology, Parasitology or Food-borne Zoonoses, Human and Animal Epidemiology, Biotechnology and Genetic Modification, Immunology and Allergology, Human Nutrition, Pharmacology, Food Technological Processes, and Analysis and Instrumentation.

The members of the Scientific Committee are appointed by the Board of Directors for a period of two years with the possibility of renewal according to excellence criteria, suitability for the functions required, independence and objective availability to correctly carry out their duties. 62 candidates, 17 of whom were university professors, applied to form part of the renewed Food Safety and Nutrition Section of the Committee.

The Committee is formally expressed through its reports, which are published in the AECOSAN Scientific Committee journal and on the AECOSAN Web page, catalogued by date and type of risk.
