On the occasion of the finalization of the EuroCigua project, the Spanish Food Safety and Nutrition Agency (AESAN) has organized the EuroCigua international workshop of ciguatera in Europe, which is going to take place on the 14 and 15 of October 2020 from 13:00 h to 17:00 h Madrid time zone, virtually through the MS Teams platform. The workshop is restricted to the consortium and by special invitation to some scientists working on related projects.
The EuroCigua international workshop will provide an ideal platform for researchers around the world to present the latest findings related to the Risk Assessment of ciguatera poisoning (CP) as well as for members of public institutions working on risk management. This event will be an opportunity to exchange knowledge about ciguatera and to discuss risk management possibilities in Europe and worldwide.
The EuroCigua outcomes will be presented, including the epidemiological data, cases and outbreaks reported in Europe, the presence of Gambierdiscus in Balearic Islands, the rate of CTX-positive fish samples in Madeira and the Canary Islands, as well as the implementation of a LC-MS/MS method for the detection of CTX, the confirmation of the Caribbean-CTX-1 as the main responsible for the contamination of fish in European waters and, finally, the potential impact of climate change and globalized markets on the expansion of ciguatera to Europe.
In addition, other projects that study the ciguatera in other areas of the world, such as Japan, Australia and Norway, will be presented.
Finally, there will be an open discussion in an exceptional round table in order to address those relevant issues about ciguatera poisoning. The coordinators of the EuroCigua project will participate in this round table, as well as members of the Advisory Board and representatives of institutions such as European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
