On 30 March 2017, the Jury for the 10th NAOS Strategy Awards, 2016, met at the Head Office of the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition (AECOSAN) in Madrid, convened under Ruling of 30 June 2016 of the Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition.
At the tenth edition, a total of 71 candidate projects were submitted in the different award categories for pre-assessment by the AECOSAN, based on the requirements of the invitation and the general assessment criteria listed in the Ruling. 25 finalists were selected and submitted before the members of the Jury for assessment and the selection of the seven prize winners and the runners-up for the 2016 edition.
For the NAOS Strategy Award of Special Recognition, the AECOSAN, for the tenth anniversary of the NAOS Strategy Awards, proposed Dr María Neira González, the present Director of the Department of Public Health and the Environment for the World Health Organisation (WHO). Dr Gonzalez was the first president of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety (AESA) between September 2002 and August 2005, and responsible for setting up the NAOS Strategy in line with the WHO directives of the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, positioning this health strategy as a priority policy specifically for the prevention of obesity and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. This placed the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, AECOSAN and Spain among the pioneer countries first to promote specific measures and polices for the prevention of obesity.
Members of the Jury accepted the NAOS Strategy Award of Special Recognition proposal and finally decided on and proposed the following winners and runners-up:
NAOS STRATEGY AWARD FOR THE PROMOTION OF HEALTHY EATING HABITS IN FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTS:
Award:
Project “Escuela de salud del Ayuntamiento de Tineo (School of Health at Tineo District Council): Un lustro de promoción de la salud en la comunidad”, (Five Years Promoting health in the Community) submitted by the School of Health at Tineo District Council. Autonomous Region of Asturias.
1st Runner-up:
Project “Alimentando tu salud (Feeding your health): Promoción de la Alimentación Saludable y sostenible en la comunidad universitaria”, (Promotion of Healthy and sustainable Diets in the university community) presented by the University of the Balearic Isles. Balearic Islands.

University of the Basque Country, Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea UPV/EHU and Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council. The Basque Country.
1st Runner-up:
Project “Actividades formativas en hábitos de vida saludables para centros escolares” (Training activities for healthy eating habits in schools), submitted by the Consumer Resource Centre of the Council of Commerce, Markets and Consumer Affairs. His Excellency City Council of Alicante. Valencia Autonomous Region.

Project “Promoción de estilos de vida saludables desde el entorno escolar (PREVIENE)” (Promotion of healthy lifestyles from schools), presented by the Faculty of Sport Sciences. University of Granada. Andalusia.
1st Runner-up:
“Programa de deporte en edad escolar”, (Programme for school-age sport) presented by the Department of Sport. Chiclana de la Frontera City Council (Cadiz). Andalusia.
NAOS STRATEGY AWARD IN THE HEALTH ENVIRONMENT:

Project “Prescribe Vida Saludable (PVS)” (Prescribing a healthy life), presented by the Bizkaia Primary Health Care Research Unit. Osakidetza. The Basque Country.

NAOS STRATEGY AWARD IN THE WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Project “Implementación de un programa de Promoción de Actividad Física y la salud holística en la empresa Unica Group (Unica Activa 2009-16)”, (Implementation of a programme for the Promotion of Physical Activity and general health in the company, Unica Group. (Unica Activa 2009-16)”, presented by the Unica Group. Andalusia.
1st Runner-up:
Project “Red Eléctrica Empresa Saludable (Red Electrica Healthy Company): implementación de planes de intervención basados en ejercicio físico individualizado y en asesoramiento dietético-nutricional personalizado para trabajadores con alto riesgo cardiovascular y/o sobrepeso” (introduction of intervention plans based on physical activity tailored to the individual and personalised dietary-nutritional advice for employees with high cardiovascular risk and/or overweight), presented by the Department of health and Safety (Red Eléctrica de España S.A.U) and the Toledo Research Group GENUD (University of Castilla-La Mancha).

NAOS STRATEGY AWARD OF SPECIAL RECOGNITION:
Dr Maria Neira Gonzalez, for setting up the NAOS Strategy as a priority and specific health strategy of the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition of the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality for the prevention of obesity and the promotion of healthy habits, coordinating the administrations, institutions and sectors in the common objectives to promote a healthy diet and the practice of physical activity, in line with the policies of the World Health Organisation and the European Union.
