Memorandum of understanding between AECOSAN AND PROFECO

On Thursday 21 April, this Memorandum was signed in a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, as part of the 12th meeting of the Bi-national Commission between Spain and Mexico.

PROFECO, the Office of the Federal Prosecutor for the Consumer: a public body dependent on the Secretary of Economy for the Mexican Federal Government. It was created to promote and protect consumer rights, encourage intelligent consumption and ensure legal safety and equity in relations between traders and consumers.

The purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding is to establish the terms and conditions to which the signing parties adhere in order to provide assistance and exchange of information, to strengthen and improve the orientation, protection and defence of the consumers.

In this collaborative environment existing between the two institutions, the following areas will be addressed:

  • Exchange of information and experience with respect to the best practices for interaction between the two institutions, the general public and the consumer associations and groups, in order to consider this information in the preparation and instrumentation of consumer protection policies.
  • Exchange of information in relation to the legal and regulatory framework for consumer protection.
  • Advice on collective actions or popular actions according to the designation in each country.
  • Training: Joint organisation of seminars, workshops and conferences for the training of personnel.
  • Exchange of information with respect to product safety. This information may refer to the reciprocal knowledge of activities carried out by laboratories of reference.
  • Development of specific research projects or programmes for consumer affairs.
  • Monitoring of alternative measures for the resolution of consumer disputes.
