On 25 and 26 April, a course was held on the "Analysis of the Presence of Genetically Modified Organisms in Food and Feed” at the Biotechnology Service of the CNA (National Food Centre).

The aim of the course was to comply with the functions and competences of the National Reference Laboratories, and to enable Official Control Laboratories to implement methods for the control of the presence of GMO authorised in the EU in food and feed under Regulation EC 1829/2003.

Nine representatives from the different Autonomous Communities including Castilla León, Castilla la Mancha, Navarra, Murcia, Santander and Madrid attended the course.

The 16-hour theoretical and practical course focussed on the development of GMO detection methods, including DNA extraction methods in samples of food and feed, screening methods for GMO detection and identification and quantification.

In light of the number of participants and the interest shown, the course is considered to have been a great success.
