Conference: Consumers, the leading players in diet

Date: 01 diciembre 2017

Section: Consumo

Teresa Robledo took part in the opening ceremony of the Conference, “Consumers, the leading players in diet”, organised by ADICAE (Association of Users of Banks, Saving Banks and Insurance), together with their president, Manuel Pardos.

The conference, which was held last Friday in Madrid in the conference hall of the School of Agricultural Engineers at the Complutense University, received a high number of participants.

The Consumers Association, ADICAE, wishes to foster critical and socially-responsible consumption of food products. Although there are more and more initiatives for raising the level of consumer awareness about the products they eat to enable them to make conscious decisions (ranging from legislative initiatives for regulating the sector and improving food information to citizen initiatives for creating alternative markets which are more transparent and sustainable), it is necessary to boost consumer knowledge about the different types of market and their impact in our home economy. Furthermore, in this environment, consumers must be made aware that their collective action is decisive not only in controlling their diet but also for contributing to a more sustainable and responsible system.

During her speech, the Executive Director of AECOSAN declared that public concern for health is evident. Therefore, it is clear that the more and better information the public receives, the better-founded are their decisions.

A well-informed consumer is a citizen equipped with the criteria to make judgements at the time of purchase. Ms Robledo also mentioned the subject of discussion in the conference “Consumers, lead players in diet. Rights, market transformation and sustainability”.

As part of the sustainability criteria, as regards food waste, we value any initiative and take part in all those actions aimed at reducing waste, explaining the five lines of the strategy “More food, less waste”, led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment.

Under the framework of the European Commission Action Plan for the Circular Economy, the Spanish Circular Economy Strategy contains the principal lines of action for starting the transition in Spain towards a circular economy, as an alternative to the existing production and consumption model of a lineal economy. The circular economy is an economic concept which is interlinked to sustainability. The aim is that the value of products, materials and resources remains in the economy for as long as possible, thereby minimising the production of waste.
