  • The Secretary general for Health and Consumer Affairs today presented the awards from the 12th edition of the prizes given every year by AECOSAN
  •  The objective is to make young people more aware of the importance of their decisions as consumers when purchasing goods or in the use of services, as well as in areas related to the household economy, safety, quality, food and energy efficiency

Since the 2005-2006 school year, the Ministry of Health has organised, together with the Autonomous Communities, the Consumópolis School Competition for young school children from the last two years of Primary School and the four years of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO). The secretary general for Health and Consumer Affairs, Javier Castrodeza, today awarded the prizes from the 12th Edition of the awards given by AECOSAN each year. Mr Castrodeza indicated that “it has been and is a positive and constructive initiative which has become a clear point of reference for the education sector”.

Almost 9000 schoolchildren from all over Spain took part in the competition, which is convened in collaboration with the Autonomous Communities. The setting of the competition is a virtual city called “Consumópolis”, in which schoolchildren are required to pass tests of a pedagogical and recreational nature related to consumer affairs.

The general objective of Consumópolis is to make young people more aware of the importance of their decisions as consumers when purchasing goods or in the use of services, as well as in areas related to the household economy, safety, quality, food, energy efficiency, etc. and, in general, to encourage them towards social and environmental respect through discerning, critical and healthy consumption.

It also aims to encourage the participation of schools through the teachers and students, in activities related to consumer education.

The tests are related to areas such as household economy, safety, quality, food, energy efficiency, etc. and in general, with discerning, critical and healthy consumption which considers social and environmental respect.

The general Competition slogan is “Responsible consumer behaviour” and each annual edition adopts a specific related topic. The 12th edition of Consumópolis, corresponding to the 2016 -2017 school year, for which the prizes were awarded today, adopted the slogan 'Internet: Are you a responsible user?”

A REFERENCE IN THE EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY

Consumópolis is already a reference in the educational community and has been a pioneer initiative in the transmission of values and knowledge relating to Responsible Consumer Behaviour in an enjoyable easy-to-absorb manner for participants.

The high level of participation of schools in the competition and their involvement (8900 students took part in this edition) demonstrates the interest generated by Consumópolis. It has been consolidated over the years as a useful tool for providing the young consumer with skills and information that will allow them to exercise their rights and comply with their responsibilities from infancy and to update them throughout their life.

Moreover, it is an excellent mechanism of collaboration between the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition and the competent bodies of the autonomous communities in the area of consumer affairs, hence the high level of participation.
