On 9 June, the Consumer and Users Association of Valencia held the 5th edition of the AVACU AWARDS. These awards are intended to support and recognise groups, businesses and initiatives for their actions and projects in defence of consumers. The ceremony was held at the Edificio del Reloj in the Port of Valencia and attended by almost 200 celebrities and authorities from Valencian society and politics.
The Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food safety and Nutrition (AECOSAN) received the “Award to the Institution” to most and best promote consumer rights on a daily basis, for pursuing the protection and promotion of consumer rights with regard to product safety and their economic interests; for promoting food safety and boosting health training, information and education in the field of nutrition and, in particular, in the prevention of obesity. Natxo Costa, Director general of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, awarded the prize to Teresa Robledo, Executive Director of the Agency, who highlighted the joint work of AECOSAN and the consumer associations.
During the gala, AVACU also awarded another two prizes:
Award to the Initiative which has most favoured Consumer rights, awarded by Maite Girau, deputy councillor for healthcare and sport, to the Participation Board (MPAC), for their concern in finding out about habits in Spanish households and, based on this knowledge, offering training and advice about agri-food. The award was collected by representatives of the associations forming the Board at present.
Award to the most socially-conscious Idea or Action – José Fondo Viana Award, for the Associations friends of Padre Vicente Berenguer, which carried out charity work in Mozambique and educational and health projects. This award was given by the Government representative, Juan Carlos Moragues, to Doctors José Luis Zaragosí and Isabel Moreno.
During the ceremony, the president of AVACU, Fernando Móner, awarded plaques to three entities in recognition of their daily work. These were AVA-ASAJA, La Unió de Llauradors and the Tyrius Association.
AVACU also wanted to give recognition to Fernando Móner, for 30 years of work in the association for the defence of consumer and user rights.
Fernando Moner is also a member of the Board of Management of AECOSAN, on behalf of the Board of Consumers and Users in Spain.
The president of AVACU and the government representative closed the event, summarising the main problems existing today in the consumer world, together with the expectations and future projects. They also highlighted the need for collaboration and the joint work of the administration, businesses and consumer associations.
