ACHIPIA (Chilean Agency for Food Safety and Quality), organised in Santiago de Chile the seminar on mechanisms for the regulation and management of functional food standards.

Last week, the training activity took place as part of the initiative “Design and Implementation of a Management System for Functional Food standards and Recognition of the Category in the Food Health Regulation”, developed by ACHIPIA as part of the Transforma Alimentos (Transform Food) Programme led by CORFO, with funding from the Strategic Investment Fund (FIE), of the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism; and run by the University of Talca.

The purpose of the initiative is to enable Chile to take advantage of the opportunity represented by this type of food, guaranteeing efficiency, safety and true information to the consumers. For this, they seek to advance in agreement with the different stakeholders in its recognition under law and on a platform which, using objective, rigorous and reliable procedures, limited in time and recognised by all those involved, supports the communication of its potential benefits, using the healthy message mechanism of the Ministry of Health.

María Dolores Gómez, Head of the Division of Nutritional Risks of the Deputy Directorate General for the Promotion of Food Safety of the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition (AECOSAN), gave a lecture on the regulation and management mechanisms regarding nutrition and health claims used in accordance with the European Union community regulations.

The activity was led by the Executive Secretary of ACHIPIA, Manuel Miranda; Mrs Lorena Rodríguez, Head of the Department of Food and Nutrition at the Ministry of Health; the vice-rector of the University of Talca, Pablo Villalobos; and Thierry De Saint-Pierre, Executive Secretary of the Strategic Investment Fund (FIE) of the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism, among others.
