This morning, Teresa Robledo, the Executive Director of AECOSAN, took part in the opening ceremony of the 6th Ongoing Training Symposium: Coeliac disease, now and in the future, which took place today at La Paz University Hospital.

Also present at the ceremony were Dr Isabel Polanco, Professor of Paediatrics at the Autonomous University of Madrid and Dr Javier Cobas, Deputy Manager of La Paz Hospital.

The conference was organised by the Carlos Vázquez Foundation for Research into Paediatric Nutrition and Gastroenterology.

During her speech, Dr Robledo stressed the significant role which the Agency has always held regarding the regulatory and statutory aspects. In fact, the Agency was a pioneer in this area, submitting a Royal Decree project to the European Commission, establishing certain additional guarantees for the manufacture, marketing and labelling of food products in order to protect persons intolerant to gluten. This served to accelerate the introduction of the current EU legislation in this respect and the participation in the drafting of the Codex standard for foods for special dietary use for persons intolerant to gluten until its adoption in 2008. Dr Robledo also mentioned the Plan of support for persons intolerant to gluten, in which, together with the associations of affected persons and scientific societies, a working group was set up leading to the establishment of a Protocol for the early diagnosis of Coeliac disease which remains in place today.

She went on to thank Dr Polanco for her important work in this area.
