The Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies-NDA Panel of the EFSA has recently updated the Scientific and technical guidance for the preparation and presentation of health claim applications.
The update is based on the experience gained and presents a standardised format for the organisation of the information for the presentation and preparation of a well-structured health claim application, outlining the scientific data and information which should be included.
For example, the guide indicates that the application should include a proposal for the wording of the health claim, information on the characteristics of the food/constituent for which the claim is made, information to allow the characterisation of the claimed effect and all high quality pertinent scientific data which form the basis for substantiation of the health claim. With respect to scientific data, the guide also outlines the hierarchy of different types of data and study designs.
The Guide (as with the earlier versions from 2007 and 2011) is, in short, an essential and highly useful tool for stakeholders wishing to submit a health claim application.
