Because of the outbreaks of ciguatera that have been reported in Europe, the determination of the incidence and epidemiological characteristics of ciguatera cases in Europe is the main goal of ISCIII.
The University of Vigo is responsible for the characterization of the risk associated with Ciguatera poisoning, by developing an efficient analytical methodology to identify the toxins, as well as developing standards and reference materials to be used for this evaluation and characterization.

The evaluation of the presence of these toxins in fish and the toxin-producing microalgae in the environment, the identification of fish species which represent a risk for human health as well as obtaining primary reference material containing CTXs are the main objectives of IRTA.
