Third Scientific Conference

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) organized the Third Scientific Conference “Science, Food, Society”, which was held from 18 to 21 of September 2018 in Parma (Italy), and in which the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition actively participated. Prior to the conference, the Advisory Forum and the Focal Point Network of EFSA held their respective regular meetings. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the creation of the Focal Point Network, they took the opportunity to acknowledge the continuity of the collaborative work of Members States with EFSA and their extraordinary commitment towards food safety.

The Conference revolved primarily around risk assessment, aiming to reflect on the future of this type of evaluation in relation to food safety and to recognize the social and political context in which they operate. An average of 1.200 participants agreed to meet in the conference, including researchers, scientists, experts on social science, risk assessors, risk managers and other stakeholders from around the world, to discuss issues related to the complex interaction between science, food and society. It was a unique opportunity for them to exchange and discuss knowledge and opinions with the leaders of the scientific community in a multidisciplinary context, as well as to gain knowledge on the future of risk assessment in food safety and the interaction between science, food and society.

AECOSAN presented a communication in poster format showing the updated results that have been obtained thus far in the project “Risk Characterization of Ciguatera Food Poisoning in Europe” (EuroCigua), which is a project coordinated by the Agency and co-financed by EFSA. The main objective of EuroCigua is to determine the incidence Ciguatera has in Europe as a new emerging risk. This project is a clear example of scientific collaboration and exchange of knowledge within a multidisciplinary team of world renowned experts on the field of ciguatoxins. Scientific excellence, innovation and cooperation are key values of EFSA that are present in this project.
